Welcome, Trailblazer!

Lily: "Trailblazers go first, so everyone can follow!"

This book is for Rangers aged about 14 to 17. It has everything in the Pathfinders book, plus axe and saw safety, fire in wind and rain, cooking fires, and the 🥇 Gold and 💎 Platinum badge steps: teaching others and helping lead a group, always with a grown-up.

Leading and helping others

How to teach a skill: 1. Tell: explain it in a few simple words. 2. Show: do it slowly while they watch. 3. Try: let them do it while you help. 4. Check: watch them do it alone, and say what went well.

How to run a practice drill: - Pick one skill. Check the space is safe. - Explain the steps, then play it as a pretend scene. - Use dolls, manikins or rolled blankets for first-aid practice, never real thrusts or breaths on a person. - Finish with what went well and one thing to practise.

Include everyone: ask before helping; plan routes, games and drills that work for wheels, slow walkers, little ones and people who speak other languages (Chapter 15).

Look after yourself too: helping others is hard work. Eat, drink water, rest, and talk to a trusted grown-up about what you've seen. Leaders need support as well.
