Chapter 15: Every Ranger Belongs
Lily: "Nobody gets left behind! Every Ranger belongs!"
Rangers come from many places and speak many languages. Some use wheelchairs like Mateo and Sami, some can't see or hear well, some are new, some are older or sick. Everyone has something to give, and everyone deserves to be included.
What Rangers know
- Ask before you help. "Would you like help?" Then listen. Mateo might want a push uphill, or might want to do it himself.
- Plans for everyone. When you plan a route, a game or a meeting place, check that everyone can get there: wheels, slow walkers, little ones, grandparents (Sami picks routes that work for everyone).
- Many ways to talk. Use pictures, gestures, simple words, a picture card or a phrase card (Item_List_150 #15, #104). Kenji's picture signs work in any language.
- Welcome newcomers. Learn their hello, show them the water point and the play space, and invite them into the game.
- Respect differences: foods, faiths, clothes, languages. Friendship works across every side.
- Check on older and sick neighbours with a grown-up: do they have water, a warm layer, someone to talk to?
- Keep learning. Go to the learning space or school in camp when you can. Learning is your right, even far from home. Walk there with friends on the safe route your grown-up shows you.
- Play is important. Child-friendly spaces are safe places to play, draw and talk to helpers.
Ranger checklist

Grown-up note
Include children and adults with disabilities in every plan (evacuation, toilets, distribution lines, learning spaces), and ask them what they need. Keep children learning in emergencies; education spaces also protect. Older people and people living alone are often missed in distributions: build buddy checks into your group.
